The 2009 Pino is 100% Bobal sourced from 60- and 95-year-old vineyards and aged in barrel for 11 months. Aromas of balsam wood, mineral, lilacs, blueberry, plum, and blackberry inform the nose of a youthful, still tightly wound wine that will benefit from several more years of cellaring. Drink this savory effort from 2014 to 2021. Bodegas y Vinedos Ponce’s new releases from the DO of Manchuela are all first-class. Manchuela, a part of the province of La Mancha, was once regarded as a backwater but in recent years wineries like Ponce have brought it to life. From a cool-sited, 30-year-old vineyard. More biodynamic Bobal, 30-year-old vines this time, grown in an even cooler spot. Very dark crimson. Masses of vitality and purity on the nose. The back label urges us to decant this wine, if I have translated correctly. Great richness and even some finesse. Pretty firm but the tannins are quite fine. Dry finish. Needs a bit more time but there is no shortage of ambition. (JR)
