The 2005 St Joseph le Paradis St Pierre is a stunner that’s up with the greatest wines from this appellation. Coming from a single vineyard and granite soils, aged 12 months 5% new barrels (the balance in older barrels and demi-muids), it offers a fresh, pure and elegant profile as well as classic northern Rhone notes of gamy meats, pepper, olive, dark fruits and granite-like minerality. While fully mature, it blossoms with time in the glass and will keep for another 10-15 years. Savvy readers should buy this cuvée by the case.

Ruby-red. Intense red and dark berry aromas, with an expansive floral quality and an intense licorice accent. Powerful and almost painfully concentrated, showing deep, sweet boysenberry and raspberry flavors framed by very gentle tannins. This was made from vines planted in the 1920s and raised in demi-muids "to preserve freshness," according to Jerome Coursodon.
