Bright ruby-red. Blacker aromas of violet pastille, mint and licorice, with an undercurrent of spice and pepper. Denser in the mouth, but comes across as a bit softer than the Cote Roziers, with a bit less energy. Intriguing herbal and minty nuances add complexity. The finish shows more wood tannins, with a slight dryness emerging with aeration.

The deep ruby/purple-hued 2001 Cote Rotie Les Rochains sees 100% new oak aging. It exhibits more size, volume, depth, and texture than the 2000. Aromas of minerals, licorice, black raspberries, blackberries, compost, licorice, and spring flowers are followed by a medium-bodied, chewy, persistent Cote Rotie. It should drink well for 11-12 years. This moderately sized domaine (approximately 17 acres) has come on strong lately thanks to the talented Christophe Bonnefond. Good bright ruby. Smoky aromas of black fruits, minerals, gunflint and iron; pure and bright. Dense and vibrant in the mouth, with complex flavors of dark fruits, minerals, mocha and smoky oak. Very primary, soil-inflected wine with solid underlying structure; not at all overly oaky despite the use of new barriques. The longest of these '01s and very promising.
