Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The superb Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 2011 from Jean-Marc Boillot offers impressive delineation on the nose, with scents of chalk and slate; dew-dappled green apples that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is ripe and quite spicy on the entry. There is clearly great depth here, but it seems more closed than Anaud Ente’s Referts, with a long and tender, slightly peachy/nectarine finish that displays good persistence. This comes recommended.

A tiny bit weedy and light on the nose but very pure and fine on the palate. Just a bit spindly – especially in relation to the 2012s. (JR)
Delicate aromas of peach and nutmeg, with a whiff of nut oil. Fine-grained and elegant; a step up in texture from the Garenne but at the same time more delicate than usual for Referts, which is usually larger-scaled. Good minerality gives finesse and energy to this attractive wine.
The 2011 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts stands out for its solid core of fruit and broad-shouldered personality. The Referts is explosive and boisterous, but also a bit four-square, at least at this stage. Floral notes add an attractive lift on the finish, but the 2011 is ideally left alone for another year or two at a minimum.
