Score 85/100 · Drink 1992-2025, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Dec 2022

Drunk from magnum, the 1982 Fonréaud is still showing quite creditably at age forty, delivering aromas of smoky berries and fresh leather, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and lively palate. Simple but attractive, it is best drunk up.

The 1982 Fonréaud has a pleasant tertiary, truffle tinged nose that just lacks a bit of vigour compared to its peers. The palate builds around a core of sweet red fruit, yet overall, this just misses a bit of depth and feels a little one-dimensional (though I like the splash of balsamic on the finish.) Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux.

Fonreaud

Situated at the highest point in the Médoc (at a huge 43 metres above sea-level), this estate is thought to be named after a spring on the site, from which Henry II supposedly drank (a “royal fountain”).
