The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles is one of the least expressive wines in Louis Boillot's cellar today. Endowed with gorgeous, saline-infused minerality, the Evocelles is cool, restrained and inward, but with notable energy and vibrancy. There is plenty of potential in the Evocelles, especially for readers who can follow it over the coming decade and beyond.

Good bright, dark red. Raspberry and pepper on the nose, along with some odd oak notes of smoke and horseradish. Then sweet and creamy on the palate, but with a slightly intrusive peppery quality. Began slightly reduced and dry-edged but cleared up nicely and lost its greenness with air to show lovely red fruit flavors and a broad, rather creamy back end. Boillot describes this premier cru as "a cold, reductive terroir ," noting that his vines here are just six years old.

Richer, sweeter than the village Gevrey. Angular. Real personality. Though not light years better than the village wine. (JR)

(from several parcels of vines ranging in age from 50 to 55 years old): Good bright, dark red. Very pure, lively aromas of red cherry, leather, game, red licorice and blood orange. Still a bit youthfully compact but this is essentially a fruit bomb on the palate, with sappy, juicy red cherry and berries dominating. The chewy finish features serious but pliant tannins and invigorating lingering perfume. These vines are essentially a continuation of Champeaux, notes Boillot.
