Tasting notes
Medium red, with moderate saturation for a wine from this address. Slightly decadent aromas of plum, animal fur, licorice and cedar, plus a faintly burnt quality. Sweet and supple in the mouth, with plum and gibier flavors hinting at torrefaction. Finishes savory and classically dry, with harmonious tannins. This is fully mature--and how often can I say that about a Dugat-Py wine?--but is in excellent shape for a village wine of its age.

Fashioned from a 75-year old parcel that yielded a measly 19 hectoliters per hectare, the 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles explodes from the glass with chocolate-covered black cherries, blueberries, and jammy blackberry aromas. This concentrated, medium-bodied wine slathers the palate with incessant layers of sweet, intense fruit. Lush, juicy blackberries, dark cherries, spices, and mocha can be found throughout this outstanding offering's character as well as in its exceptionally long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012. No offense to Peter Weygandt, this estate’s importer, but can anyone think of an easier job than having to sell Bernard Dugat’s wines? For the past decade, this 7.5 hectare (18.53 acre) domaine has consistently produced exceptional wines, a testimony to the relentless pursuit of quality exhibited by Dugat, his wife, and children. “Yes, it’s true that we live in the vineyards, working from morning to night, but the primary reasons we don’t have the same problems as many others in Burgundy is that we concentrate on having low yields and are fortunate enough to have old vines,” sais Bernard Dugat. Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800
Extremely deep colour. Big, round, thick and sweet. Quite different in style from most other wines tasted. Full, rich, flattering at first but still brutal and needs lots of time. (Cask sample). (JR)
