Score 91/100 · Drink 2004-2009, Pierre Rovani, Feb 2004

The 2001 Macon-Villages Tradition (Domaine de la Bongran) is even better than I predicted a year ago. It bursts from the glass with deep, spicy aromas of herbal teas. This rich, light to medium-bodied wine is packed with liquefied rocks, resin-laced minerals, and pears. Flint can be found in its long, highly expressive, supple finish. Projected maturity: now-2009. Domaine de la Bongran (Thevenet Quintaine)

Domaine de la Bongran is no ordinary Mâconnais estate. Since Jean Thévenet took over the domaine in 1972, this Viré-Clessé producer has become a cult name – with Jean a pioneer of organics and minimal intervention, as well as the estate’s unique wine style.
