Gaja's 2004 Conteisa is just beginning to enter the early part of its plateau of maturity. The tannins have softened nicely, while the flavors show attractive elements of complexity that has developed in bottle. Smoke, licorice, mint and wild flowers add shades of dimension. As always, Conteisa is a classic La Morra wine built on silkiness that brings out a distinctly feminine expression of Nebbiolo. (AG)

The 2004 Langhe Conteisa, from vineyards in La Morra, is especially dark-toned and rich in this vintage. Made in an uncharacteristically weighty, opulent style for this wine, it reveals plenty of ripe dark fruit, spices, new leather, licorice and tar. With air it gradually turns somewhat more feminine and delicate, yet it remains a gorgeous, sumptuous wine of outstanding pedigree.

Full red-ruby. Wild, superripe aromas of black cherry, flowers, menthol and mint. Offers a superb sappy core of black cherry and floral flavors, with a creaminess of texture that gives this wine a deceptive approachability. Wonderfully sweet in the middle and suave and perfumed on the very long, slowly mounting finish.
