Score 94/100 · Drink 2016-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2017

The 1996 Conteisa shows the darker, more masculine side of its personality. Sweet black cherry, tobacco, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and pine infuse this deeply expressive, layered wine. In many vintages, Conteisa leans towards the more delicate side of things, but not in 1996.

This wine was chosen because it was their first vintage from this five ha vineyard in La Morra – a major, major move for the Gaja. Interesting that two Barolos were chosen for this tasting. They bought it in 1995 but were hailed on so severely that year that this was the first commercial production. Still mid blackish ruby. Still quite dry and tarry with masses of acidity in evidence. Sweet fruit with a hint of balsam and still intriguingly concentrated and youthful. (JR)

The opaque purple-colored 1996 Barolo Conteisa reveals a sweet, ripe nose with an element of sur-maturite given its over-ripe cassis, melted road tar, licorice, and spice-scented bouquet. It exhibits a voluptuous texture, layers of concentrated fruit, and full body. Its tannin is largely concealed by the wine's glycerin, alcohol, and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020.
