1967 Grange

Fruit from Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill. Fairly dry growing season followed by a warm vintage. 94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14 months in new American oak hogsheads. pH 3.68, TA 5.2 g/l. Very very very slightly porty nose. Richly syrupy. Very sweet finish. Molten blackcurrant fruit gums. J Watson won – originally I gave it 17.5. But it’s looking very good. (JR)

94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide) blend . Dark brownish crimson with a hit of oxidation. Sweet liquorice – a wine you would need to understand to like. Drying a bit. Peter Gago says this is not a great bottle. This wine won the Jimmy Watson Trophy, like the 1965. Odd because Grange doesn’t usually perform well young. Drying a little, though it’s easy to imagine how good a good bottle would taste. Drying and slightly porty on the finish. (JR)

Production: 3,530 cases Blend: 94% Shiraz/6% Cabernet Sauvignon Of the oldest vintages, the 1967 possessed the richest, sweetest, most seductive fruit. The nose offered up intensely fragrant, candied, sweet berry/cedar/spicy aromas. Opulently-textured, with gobs of red and black fruits, low acidity, and no tannin, this fully mature, richly fruity, medium to full-bodied Grange Hermitage is a less muscular example of the early years.
