The colour is beginning to soften and turn russet pink around the edges, and the aromatics are moreish and enticing, with sweet tobacco, bacon rind, campfire smoke and charcoal. A vintage I love, and this is totally living up to my expectations, with a gentle power that builds through the palate, salinity exemplified, with the blueberry, raspberry puree and saffron character that is such a signature of older Pavie Macquin. 80% new oak that by now is smoky, stretched out, langorous, gentle. Part of the classic vintages series within this vertical, and I can't recommend highly enough. Don't expect fireworks, this is subtle but rewarding.

The 2001 Pavie Macquin, made by Stéphane Derenoncourt, is far superior on the nose compared to the 2000, delivering Bing cherries, boysenberry, blue fruit and light marmalade aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firmer structure than the previous year. However, I still find a little volatility on the finish, and certainly this is missing the length of more recent vintages. Though it’s better than the 2000, I would prefer a glass from the last decade, to be honest.

The 2001 Pavie-Macquin is sublime. It might not be the most typical Pavie-Macquin, but it sure is compelling. There is a sense of translucence and aromatic intensity that is decidedly Burgundian. Silky, nuanced and medium in body, the 2001 is sublime from the very first taste. It is without question one of the most beautiful and alluring wines in this lineup. My only concern with the 2001 is that it might not be extremely long-lived. Then again, it has made it this far, and done so in grand style.
