Allemand is an up and coming Cornas superstar and his 1990 is a dazzling example of the appellation. The color of this 1990 is black/purple. The nose offers up splendidly ripe aromas of bacon fat and cassis. In the mouth, this wine is flamboyant and rich, with surprisingly soft tannins for a Cornas, but fabulous concentration and a full-bodied, lush, long finish. Allemand’s wines set the benchmark for Cornas: expressive Syrahs crafted with uncompromising traditional methods and released in tiny quantities. From the 1980s, he revived abandoned vineyards on Cornas’s steep granite slopes, building his domaine without inherited land or financial support.
