Medium red. Expressive aromas of raspberry, licorice, mocha and tobacco lifted by a peppery note. Juicy but on the lean side, with a slightly green medicinal quality accentuated by fresh acidity. I don't find quite enough mid-palate material to support the firm tannins, which gives the finish a slight dry edge.

The 2008 Barbaresco Coparossa turns up the volume a bit, but it is equally striking. Sweet cherries in liqueur, spices, menthol, pine and licorice are just some of the notes that flow from this beautifully balanced Barbaresco. The finish turns captivating and exotic, with expressive fruit and well-integrated oak that meld together seamlessly. This is an elegant, understated Barbaresco from Bruno Rocca.
