The 1995 Clos Fourtet is a vintage that, to my surprise, I have not tasted before. It has a delightful bouquet, mature yet well defined, with tobacco-infused red berry fruit and light forest floor aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a gutsy opening and fine tannins, with blackberry and wild strawberry fruit. Maybe a little Left Bank in style, thanks to the influence of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc (15% of the blend). Quite youthful, this is a Clos Fourtet that deserves a round of applause. Tasted at the 1995 Bordeaux off-line at Piccolino in London.

Dense ruby. Slightly restrained but very gorgeous and supple on the nose. Lovely balance – very ripe at the start and then beautiful texture and lift. Tea flavours. Clean. The only thing wrong with this is that it won’t last for decades. Long. Classical style. Not massive. (JR)

A very fine effort from Clos Fourtet, the 1995 exhibits a medium dark plum color, followed by sweet black cherry and kirsch fruit intertwined with minerals and toasty oak. Tightly wound on the palate, with medium body, excellent delineation and purity, and a spicy finish with plenty of grip, this example has closed down considerably since bottling, but it does possess excellent sweetness and depth. However, the tannin is more elevated, so this 1995 will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.
