Score 89/100 · Drink 2025-2030, Neal Martin, Apr 2023

The 1989 Clos Fourtet, the first time that I have encountered this vintage, demonstrates more colour degradation than the 1990. It is firmly into its secondary phase aromatically with scents of animal fur and dried blood, hints of black truffle emerging with time. Maybe some Brettanomyces here...but I've seen worse. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite Pomerol-like in style, with a gamey finish that is not fully mature. Enjoyable, though not profound. Tasted at the Clos Fourtet vertical in April 2023.

The 1989 is an alcoholic, exuberantly styled, easy to drink wine, but its lack of grip, definition, and tannin may give some concern. Anticipated maturity: Now-1998.

Very refined. Lovely perfumed wine of floral, berry and strawberry aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, silky aftertaste. Why wait?--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2004. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1999
