The 2002 Cheval Blanc is a wine that I had not encountered for some time, this bottle not poured at the château but at a dinner in London. It's a decent if unremarkable Saint-Émilion that leans towards the Left Bank on the nose. The Cabernets are more expressive than the Merlot. The palate is balanced with a sprinkling of black pepper, tertiary red fruit, a little austere for Cheval Blanc yet with commendable length. (NM)

Mid crimson with a pale rim. Fragrant and rather seductive. Long, well integrated. Intense. Lots of fire power in reserve. Throat warming but still quite tight. Bright fruit. This wine was admittedly put into one of those giant wine glass (Graal?) decanters and not stoppered overnight (silly me). It did not retain its fruit but was battling circumstances. (JR)
Mid crimson. Rather opulent and complex on the nose compared to most 2002s. Meaty, even a little spicy. Polished and eloquent. Fruit and then dry. But lustrous and well balanced. Very appetising and successful. (JR)
