Score 98/100 · Drink 1970-2040, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

One of the great vintages for this estate is the 1950 Cheval Blanc, one of the most concentrated, intensely flavored wines of the postwar era here. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of mulberries, vine smoke, orange confit, espresso roast and gravelly soil, it's full-bodied, rich and layered, with a deep and multidimensional core of fruit framed by rich, sweet tannins, concluding with a long, savory finish. Still a saturated ruby-black in hue, it should prove almost immortal.

Magnum and absolutely glorious. Still dark crimson with great polish. Sweet, round and fresh with great perfection of texture and flavour and a flattering texture that got a little grainier with time in the glass. Lucky me to have been born in this year and not the next one. (JR)

This could hardly be more different from the Cheval 1970 served alongside. Very dark crimson still and extremely cocentrated.  A press wine cocktail? I have been lucky enough to taste this wine at least twice before (probably from the same case, I was slightly tetchily reminded by our host) and this bottle was not up to the level of the others. It was really very volatile even though the fruit held up and was not yet oxidised. Thick, sweet and grainy. (JR)

Amazing crimson! So deep. So rich and sweet and thick and velvety. Tastes as though it is just right for drinking tonight. Wonderfully creamy and fleshy. Long, mineral notes. (JR)
