Tasting notes
The concentrated 1996 Hermitage Le Greal is a powerful Syrah exhibiting a saturated ruby/purple color, creme de cassis-like fruit, medium to full body, and good but not excessive acidity. Although not a powerhouse, relying more on finesse than muscle for its appeal, there is plenty of substance to this lovely wine. It should drink well now and over the next 15 years. Very dark ruby-red. Sauvage aromas of black cherry, cassis and saddle leather. Pure, densely packed dark berry and pepper flavors in the mouth; juicy, brisk and intensely flavored. Strong acidity gives this wine a penetrating quality. Firmly structured and very persistent, finishing with tongue-dusting tannins. Sorrel believes this is not far off from his '95 in quality. Needs extended bottle aging.
