The 2002 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked between 30 September and 9 October. As you would expect, it has a more straight-laced, less flattering bouquet compared to the 2001 with a mixture of red and black fruit suffused with scents of cured meat and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a little shallow on the mid-palate but pretty in its unashamed simplicity. Like many 2002s, it is not a flamboyant wine and it loses some complexity towards the no-frills finish, but at least it has lasted the course and it should give several more years of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the château.

Some development and a simple red core. Fragrant and quite silky textured. Not trying to outsmart the vintage. Pretty 'lunchtime claret' – though there is a hint of green that would put some drinkers off... (JR)
Deep red. Aromas of redcurrant, cedar and minerals, with a faint herbal aspect. Juicy, tightly wound and on the lean side, with a penetrating, juicy quality to the rather subdued fruit. This relies more on its slightly tart acids than on its firm tannins for structure. A tad dry on the finish but offers good grip.
