An underestimated vintages (often with good reason) that is performing strongly right now if you select carefully. Clinet is without doubt one to look out for, with its focus on the floral aspects of Pomerol, plenty of curling edges of raspberry leaf, peony, with fresher acidity than the first few vintages in this vertical. Grilled campfire smoke as it opens, and this has a mouthwatering unfussy appeal, and is impressive. Ronan Laborde owner. 60% new oak.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Clinet offers attractive kirsch, black cherry, leather and game on the nose, a touch of truffle and peppermint emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a gamy, leathery entry, a healthy pinch of black pepper lacing the black fruit, leading to a surprisingly structured and masculine finish. Unlike some of its Pomerol peers, I can see this Clinet holding up and even improving over the next decade. This was a very positive showing. Tasted February 2017.

Deep garnet with slight browning at the rim. Very meaty and savoury on the nose, leather and undergrowth aplenty. Chewy and unusually generous on the palate for this vintage. Has fruit depth and richness and a chocolate-textured smoothness on the finish well balanced by the acidity. Really savoury like non-sweet molasses. Harmonious and distinctive. Still more to come.
