Tasting notes
'A very warm summer led to an early harvest.' 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Poured from double magnum. Lustrous mature ruby with bright brick rim. Stunning nose of oak, cherry, cassis and cigar case. On the palate there is more than a suggestion of the Médoc, with ripe cassis fruit framed by intense tannins that pull the wine firmly back to the Langhe. Endlessly long, elegant and cool. (WS)

The 2000 Darmagi is notably less successful than the very fine 1999, a bit herbaceous on the nose, forceful but a bit dry and tight in texture. Drink: 2005-2016. Wines like this, made by Piedmont’s most famous producer, can only arouse some serious doubts about the future of Cabernet in the region. Importer: Paterno Imports, Lake Bluff, IL; tel.
