Lovely wine at an excellent moment to drink, one of the recommendations of the tasting. Welcoming, easy-going, with waves of blackberry compote, pomegranate, vanilla bean and spiced saffron. Ready to drink and share, this is a charming wine which asks only that you relax and enjoy it.

The 2009 Les Ormes de Pez has a strange nose at first, a little distant and missing the same fruit intensity as its peers. There is a slight dustiness here that translates over the palate. Good fruit concentration and grip, just a touch of greenness around the edges with a welcome dash of spice towards the finish. Thoroughly enjoyable if just missing some finesse. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

The medium to deep garnet colored 2009 Ormes de Pez gives up meaty notes of chargrill and rosemary-roasted lamb over a core of warm cassis and baked plums plus a waft of fried herbs. Medium-bodied, it has a firm, chewy frame and bold freshness supporting the savory layers, finishing with an herbal lift.

Tasted blind. Slightly weak rim. Simple sweet-and-sour impression on the nose. And pretty simple on the palate. Something just a bit dead about this fruit. Box-ticking rather than thrilling. Drying, messy finish at the moment but it will probably develop into something rather fine. Very lively. (JR)
