Tasting notes
Trimbach's 1996 Riesling Frederic-Emile cuvee displays the nose of a mature wine yet a youthful, unevolved personality. As the question mark indicates, I am uncertain how this will play out. Rich aromas of creamed almonds and Cynar (an Italian artichoke liqueur) are found in this medium-bodied, dry, concentrated, and broad wine. Precise nut, mineral, lime, and herbal flavors make up this complex, impeccably balanced offering's personality. Ripe but tangy aromas of lime, orange peel, mint and chalk. Penetrating, hard-edged lime and orange zest flavors; a low-fat wine enlivened by electric acidity. With its strong impression of malic acidity, this is a perfect example of the 1996 vintage: there virtually nothing like this wine in either '97 or '98. A wine of noteworthy purity, but painfully tight today. Very long and strong on the aftertaste.
