Score 16.5/20 · Drink 2003-2012, Jancis Robinson MW, Sep 2003

Fruit from this ancient vineyard on the edge of Adelaide is aged in all-new oak of which two-thirds is French nowadays . This wine is gentle and easy to drink with good acidity and still quite marked tannins on the edge of the palate too. You can smell the black pepper associated with a cooler growing season. This wine is relatively elegant for a Penfolds red. I sensed a little coconut, perhaps a persistent hangover from the new American oak. Perhaps an atypical Magill which will disappoint followers of the usual concentrated, not to say browbeating, style and fail fully to satisfy those looking for more delicacy. (JR)

The classy 2000 Shiraz Magill Estate exhibits an excellent bouquet of black currants, raspberries, white flowers, and oak in a subtle yet authoritatively rich style that oozes class, elegance, and breed. Built on finesse along with flavor authority as opposed to power, muscle, and over the top alcohol, this medium-bodied beauty is best consumed over the next decade.
