The 1998 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is relatively youthful on the nose: dark berry fruit, cola and earthy scents. I don't find the oak as well integrated here compared to other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-balanced, backward and sinewy. It gallops along nicely without every demanding reams of superlatives. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner.

Mid ruby. Interesting autumnal notes on the nose and then pretty heavy and severe on the palate. Bit galumphing and charmless. (JR)
