The 2009 La Romanée Grand Cru puts in a curious showing. Paler in hue, I wonder whether there is any stem addition in the wine. Indeed, the nose is lighter than expected, with red cherries, strawberries, loam and espresso. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with commendable sharpness on the entry. Lightly spiced with a little attenuation towards the finish. To be honest, I was expecting more. Tasted blind at the 2009 horizontal at Club 1243.

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2009 La Romanée Grand Cru is going from strength to strength. It has a clear dark garnet colour. The nose is exquisite, perhaps having dispensed with just some of its nascent richness since I last tasted it in 2011, armed with bewitching wild strawberry, raspberry coulis scents that crescendo. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully balanced with that tincture of dried blood extant. There is real finesse and poise embroidered in this La Romanée that knows that sometimes less is more. Tasted June 2015.

The 2009 La Romanée is warm, radiant and seductive, with all of the charm that is so typical of the year. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, plum, leather and spice take on bold shades of expression. The 2009 is a bit hard to taste in this context, as all the other wines served alongside it are far more mature. The bottle I tasted the following day turned out to be far more rewarding. I have used that score and drinking window here.

The 2009 La Romanée is stunningly beautiful. It boasts the most sensual, sleek tannins imaginable. Sweet cherries in liqueur, roses, spices and licorice are woven together in a fabric of indescribable elegance. Words are superfluous in describing this eternal, timeless beauty. Frankly, it was hard to spit the 2009,
