Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2003 La Romanée Grand Cru bottled by Bouchard Père & Fils has a bright ruby colour. The bouquet is attractive for such a warm vintage having retained plenty of freshness. Mulberry mixed with leather and later blackcurrant pastille that are nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, quite soft tannin, but there is a grittiness and slight dryness that surfaces toward the second half. It is a commendable expression on the finish and the spicy, black pepper finish is enticing, but I maintain that the mineralité and tension was erased by the heat of that summer. Tasted June 2015.

Full red-ruby. Superripe but sappy aromas of black raspberry, minerals and white and black pepper. Wonderfully concentrated and vibrant, with great sweetness buffered by mineral lift. Exotic notes of pineapple and ginger add complexity. As superripe as this is, it avoids the roasted side of the vintage. Finishes with compelling sap and length.

Super ripe, spicy and sexy black fruit aromas that are neither surmature nor roasted have nuances of mocha, tobacco, anise and clove framed by a background touch of oak toast merge into extract of pinot flavors that coat the mouth and are unbelievably complex and quite fine given the general character of the vintage. This is an exciting and ageworthy wine with that wow factor, crafted in a very ripe but not jammy or over-the-top style. Allen Meadows, Burghound. Apr01,2005
