The textbook 1996 Barolo San Giovanni offers a classic tar and rose petal-scented bouquet with hints of cherry liqueur, smoke, and dried herbs. This dark ruby-colored wine is full-bodied, dense, and layered, with outstanding concentration and purity. There is moderate tannin as well as superb depth and muscle. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Ruby red to the rim. Redcurrant, flowers, oak spice and a faintly animal quality on the nose. Minerally, pungent and penetrating, though not especially sweet. Finishes with firm, slightly tough tannins. Seems a bit dry at the core.
