I had already nipped downstairs to procure a bottle from High Timber’s cellar, returning with a 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon from Meerlust. My modest expectations were surpassed. This has matured well over the years, now presenting a ripe and slightly smudged red currant, morello cherry and blood orange nose, and showing just a tad of volatility, though it’s nothing to get too worked up about. The palate is balanced with good weight, a core of sweet red fruit and a Médoc-like, cedar-tinged finish. Such a shame that many South African wines are drunk young… Mea culpa.

I prefer the excellent 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured for 18 months in 80% new Nevers 300-liter barrels, the it represents the first release since 2005. It has a broody nose of dark berried fruit, a touch of mint and cedar with a scent of hot bricks emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with ripe, fleshy tannins and vibrant acidity. There seems to be greater focus and precision here than displayed by the flagship Rubicon. Drink now-2018. Meerlust is one of Stellenbosch’s, perhaps South Africa’s most famous names, owned by the Myburgh family since 1757. Their 110-hectares of vine are focused upon classic French grape varieties and their flagship Rubicon, which debuted in 1980, has become one of the country’s international icons. All said, the current range of wines did not quite set the pulse racing. Whilst the Rubicon is certainly a good wine at a reasonable price, I feel that it might have been overtaken by some of its peers in recent years, perhaps including cellar master Chris Williams own “The Foundry” wines.
