Score 91/100 · Drink 2021-2025, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2021

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso comes to life in the glass with a display of dusty blackberry, brown spice and leather. It opens further with time to reveal sour cherry, dark chocolate, tobacco, white smoke and hints of vanilla. The only sign of its age is the slightest hint of olive brine and moist fall leaves. It’s silky and pliant, boasting dark red and black fruits with zesty acids and sour citrus bringing energy. Cooling mineral tones and mentholated herbs add further lift throughout the long, still structured, but vibrant finish, as a coating of tart berry concentration and earth tones linger. Well-stored bottles of the 2001 Pianrosso should enjoy another three to five years of optimal drinking. Tasted from a trusted collector's perfect cellar.

The stylish, cask-aged 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens with a floral, aromatic nose followed by sweet, perfumed red fruit that blossoms onto the palate with notable expansiveness in a superb display of finesse and elegance, closing with fine, supple tannins. Though tempting to drink today, it will be even better in a few years and will drink well to age twenty. It is one of the vintage’s great wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2021. Big casks only. 14.5 per cent. Quite diffuse, ‘wild’ aromas of herbs and undergrowth. Very sweet palate entry – chock full of flavour and with one of the most exotic ranges of different flavours already. There’s a strange delicacy about this too. Very good! (JR)
