The 1982 has long been one of my favorite Monfortinos. It still is, although each time I taste it, I think time is gaining the upper hand. The 1982 is vibrant and quite energetic in the glass. Its construction is more about linear intensity than textural breadth. Floral and spice notes appear with a bit of air, adding layers of dimension while expanding the finish. As great as the 1982 is, I would not push my luck too much further on aging.

The 1982 Monfortino has long been one of my favorites. Some bottles are beginning to fade just a bit, but from magnum, the 1982 is silky, layered and exceptionally beautiful, with a long finish and fabulous overall balance. Tasted from magnum.

The 1982 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is layered, perfumed and pretty seductive, it is also the most open of the three Barolos in this flight. I have always adored the 1982, but in this flight, its place in history is pretty evident.

The 1982 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is one of my very favorite Barolos, and tonight it is fantastic. This is an especially elegant, refined Monfortino that impresses more for its inner sweetness and perfume rather than the extroverted fruit that defines vintages such as 1968, 1978, 1985, 1990 and 1997. The wine's length and overall balance are nothing short of spellbinding.
