At the 20 year mark, tawny ruby in colour, just beginning to soften in terms of its mouthfeel but still with plenty of tannic structure, this feels well balanced and elegant, in classic St Julien territory. Tobacco, cigar box, soy, turmeric, cumin, cassis, charming, finessed and thoroughly enjoyable style, with mouthwatering freshness on the finish. Harvest September 30 to October 16, 60% new oak.

Philippe Blanc mentioned how the 2004 Beychevelle was picked ten days earlier than wanted because of rot. "We harvested ten hectares of Merlot in a day, on a Sunday, which saved us," he recalls. It has quite a punchy bouquet with ample redcurrant and cranberry fruit, clove and thyme, though it lacks the precision and detail of Beychevelle's finer vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with furry tannins, good depth, a solid Saint-Julien without much flair, though I appreciate its savory, spicy finish. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property.

Real interest and excitement. Difficult to spit this one out! Sweet start but overall juicy and appetising and not tarty. Second favourite of the group, after Gruaud. (JR)

About the producer

Château Beychevelle 1:1
Beychevelle

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
