This was my first encounter with the 1985 Beychevelle. To be honest, it's not a golden period for this Saint-Julien. It has a strange nose, some Brettanomyces plus the wood component which seems disjointed to what little fruit there is. The palate is quite candied on the entry, a feral Beychevelle with a Rhône-like, slightly caramelly finish. Disappointing in the context of the vintage.

The 1985 admirably reflects the character of this charming vintage. Deep ruby, low in acidity, ripe, round, fruity, and precocious, this medium-bodied, supple wine is very tasty and displays the cedary, black currant fruit so common in the wines of St.-Julien. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 3/90.

Stylish, with vanilla, spice and cherry aromas and flavors, very silky texture and a long vanilla finish. Drinkable now.--The Bordeaux 50. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 1994.

About the producer

Château Beychevelle 1:1
Beychevelle

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
