Score 83/100 · Drink 2025-2026, Neal Martin, Sep 2024

The 1964 Beychevelle is indicative of a mediocre vintage in the Médoc. Quite lean on the nose, it evidences some under-ripe fruit. The palate is slightly coarse with light tannins, austere and slightly hollow. The finish suggests that it was heavily chaptalized to compensate, ending up a bit... ersatz. Not the best, but then again, few Left Bank château made a great wine this year.

Beginning to crack up ever so slightly, the 1964 Beychevelle still has a good measure of chunky fruitiness a rustic, medium- to full-bodied feel on the palate, and a creeping brownish cast to the color. The bouquet is particularly spicy for Beychevelle. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 1/81.

Beychevelle

With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
