Score 88/100 · Drink 2009-2013, David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, Dec 2009

Black tea, cardamom, and charred meat in the nose of Groffier's 2006 Gevrey-Chambertin are joined on the palate by welcome sweetness of ripe dark cherry and purple plum. Bright and invigorating, but with interesting meaty low-tones, this finishes with plenty of stamina; the merest trace of heat and astringency; and the promise of satisfaction over the next 3-4 years, representing a second successive favorable showing for a formerly often undistinguished bottling from the lieu dit Les Seuvrees, below Mazoyeres and the route nationale. The 2006 Groffier collection – from fruit picked beginning September 23, and in only four days – was noticeably lower in alcohol than a number of recent predecessors, and was diminished by one-third vis-a-vis 2005, after botrytis- and hail-affected berries had been culled. Bright medium red. Black cherry and licorice on the nose. Juicy, spicy and tight, with suggestions of cassis and candied red fruits. Not showing much flesh today. In fact, I find this rather dry following the 2007s.

Deep red-ruby. Expressive aromas of black cherry, leather and smoked meat; this could only be from Gevrey. Supple and rich, with a nicely restrained sweetness to its flavors of dark berries and smoked meat. Strong soil tones and a leathery element emerge on the back end, which features some dusty tannins.
