Vinfolio, May 2015

This is quite evolved on the nose. Toffee, wet leaves, liquorice. Broad and open. This has less depth than the 2006 and is much more loosely structured but is showing very well now.

Castiglione Falletto. Still quite dark. Almost chocolatey cherry nose, then mushroom and almost a little salty. The tannins are better absorbed in the fruit than in the Vigna San Giuseppe at this stage. Lovely acidity, but ends a little rustic and could be a little more complex. (WS)

Fresh, dark red. Fresher on the nose and more accessible than the Vigna San Giuseppe, offering aromas of dark raspberry, coffee, mocha, truffle and animal fur. Almost syrupy-sweet and deep, but with less sheer size and structure than the San Giuseppe. The big tannins reach the front teeth but arrive late, allowing the wine's sweetness to come through. Ripe, harmonious acidity gives this Barolo verve. Seems better balanced for drinking in this lifetime than the San Giuseppe.

The 2005 Barolo Riserva Vignolo emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, tar, mint, licorice and plums. There is an exotic quality to the fruit I find very appealing yet this remains a quintessential Castiglione Falletto Barolo built on aromatics, elegant fruit and silky tannins. There is an energy and vibrancy I find highly appealing. The 2005 is a feminine Vignolo, but the wine gains considerable richness as it sits in the glass. This is a fabulous showing.
