A potential sleeper of the vintage, and one of the finest efforts from Maucaillou in the last decade, this dark plum/ruby-colored 2002 offers sweet creme de cassis, plum, and cherry aromas, medium to full body, moderate tannin, and pure, persistent fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2012

Blackish crimson with pale rim. Stewed nose with some elements of overripeness. Pinched, ungenerous. Lots of dry tannins and acidity but a lack of fruity middle. Sandpaper finish. (JR)

About the producer

Owned by the négociant Dourthe, this Moulis property has 87 hectares of vines today (with 67 added by Philippe Dourthe since 1967). Managed and made by an expert team, the quality here is hardly surprising.
