Tasting notes
An impressive, French barrique-aged blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from the Greve region of Tuscany, this deep ruby/purple-colored 1997 boasts a provocative perfume of black currants, cherries, balsam wood, cedar, tobacco, and smoke. Although backward, it possesses powerful, concentrated flavors, moderately high tannin levels, good acidity, and a style built for the long haul. Readers seeking immediate gratification should pass it by. Those with patience and cool cellars will be rewarded with a splendid wine in 4-6 years. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025. Solid, deep garnet, less concentrated at the rim. A bit undefined on the nose; fruity but without a decisive cabernet character. Medium-bodied and vigorous on the back half, but somewhat tannic at the moment and lacking in personality.
