Score 93/100 · David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate, Feb 2006

With their 2004 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese A.P. #16 – which was auctioned – the Schaefers selected for “tiny, yellow-green berries” and in consequence achieved a dynamic interactivity as well as sheer concentration of flavor, and near-weightlessness on the palate that are genuinely striking. Pure aromas of white peach, apple, vanilla, honey, black raspberry, and lemon usher in an invigoratingly saline and citric palate on which is spread a fine layer of honey. The finish is bright and gripping, yet refined and delicate, rich but dynamic. Rumor has it that Schaefer was concerned at the auction lest the price get beyond the range that his loyal customers can afford. If true, this anecdote is typical Willi Schaefer! Auction bottling. Very solid without much nose at the moment. Strong citrus spine and still a bit chewy. Needs several years. Firm, long-laster but for the moment it is far from ethereal. (JR)
