The 1998 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru puts in a good showing at 20 years of age. Quite deep in colour, it has an attractive nose with mulberry and sous-bois aromas, maybe missing a little brightness but certainly with good depth. The palate has a swarthiness that I admire. Fine grip and well judged acidity, maybe rustic for some but I appreciate the rondeur towards the finish. Moderate length. A bit old school but there is nothing wrong with that. Tasted over dinner in Beaune during Burgfest.
