One of the most youthful 2004 Grüner Veltliners – still very lively with lots codity but more characteristic pepper and spice than most. Relatively delicate for this grape – and certainly at the other end of the scale from the wine below. (JR)

There was no question about the quality or put-togetherness of Pichler’s recently bottled 2004 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibnerberg. A sweetly scented nose, this time of pear, peach, mandarins, litchi, and mango leads to a clear, bright palate of medium weight in which refreshing citricity, aromatic sweet herbal notes, brown spices, and tropical and “northern” orchard fruits harmoniously cavort. A rush of bitter-sweet floral flavors adds to the complexity of the long finish. Ripe yet restrained in weight and alcohol, harmonious yet possessed of energy, drive, and grip, this is gorgeous now and should repay 8-12 years’ cellaring.
