I must say that the 1999 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape blanc (a blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, and Picardin) is an impressive dry white. It offers aromas of peaches and pears presented in a medium-bodied, fruit-driven format. Importer: Alain Junguenet, Wines of France, Mountainside, NJ; tel. (908) 654-6173

Aromas of dried fruits, pear and peach, plus a hint of hazelnut. This will go minerally in a year, says Avril. Rich and quite ripe, with flavors of honey and grilled almonds. Slightly alcoholic but holds its shape nicely on the finish. Perhaps a bit brighter than the '98.
