The 1989 Grand-Puy Ducasse might be one of the best mature vintages of this Pauillac that I have ever tasted. Deep in colour, it has a well defined bouquet with blackberry, cedar and a touch of cassis. Not a complex nose for sure, but it is nicely focused. The palate has a ripe entry that feels sorbet-fresh, notes of blood orange and vivid red fruit, crisp almost brittle in texture with a very tensile, quite tart finish. This far exceeds my expectations. Tasted blind at "Philip's Belated February Christmas Party."

The 1989 is forward, with a cedary, ripe, moderately intense bouquet. Not a blockbuster, but spicy and delicious, with abundant quantities of chocolate and cassis-flavored fruit, this may be the finest wine from this property in decades. Anticipated maturity: Now-2002.
A big, bruising '89. Superdark, inky color. Intense blackberry and cherry character and hints of black licorice. Full-bodied, very velvety, with loads of tannins and an earth, berry and dark chocolate aftertaste. Seriously good for Grand-Puy-Ducasse.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2004. About the producer
The 40 hectares of this Pauillac Fifth Growth are spread across three sites, pieced together in the 18th century by Pierre Ducasse. Today owned by France’s Crédit Agricole bank, they have some very fine vineyard land, with their northernmost plot neighbouring Mouton and Lafite.
