Tasting notes
(destemmed) Good deep, bright red. Raspberry, smoke, licorice, minerals and a saline nuance on the complex and expressive nose and palate. Dense and thick but with terrific sappy lift. This really fills the mouth with flavor while remaining light on its feet. The very long, resounding finish throws off kaleidoscopic soil tones. Offers superb potential.

Nicolas Potel's négociant wine. 'No chaptalisation and no filtration therefore the most natural wines we've made for years. Some winemakers make a comparisons with 2003 – but there were more than 100 days between flowering and picking in 2007 and 2008. 2007 was less delicate than we thought; I was tempted to bottle in September but found the wines were not ready.' Pretty closed right now. Very fine tannins but not yet showing a great deal of flesh or perfume. Not at all co-operative and hard to judge. But there is a dark savoury firmness that bodes well for the longer term. (JH)
