Tasting notes
Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2009

Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, licorice and bitter chocolate; began with a porty aspect but seemed to grow fresher in the glass. Fat on entry, then stuffed with fruit, with strong acidity giving it shape and energy. A very sweet, rich barbera that finishes with broad, dusty tannins. According to new cellarmaster Gianmatteo Raineri, this wine shows less body than the 2006 version. The grapes had high sugars, and the team may have picked early, he went on-hence the impression of high acidity.

The 2007 Barbera d'Alba Trevigne displays superb richness, elegance and balance in its layers of fragrant, dark fruit. This sumptuous, impeccable Barbera is sure to provide immense drinking pleasure over the next few years. Some of the overt oakiness of past vintages is missing and what comes through is a glorious expression of Barbera and Piedmontese winemaking at its very highest level. This is a wonderful effort from Domenico Clerico.

It’s great to see Clerico back in action as he battles through a serious illness. Clerico remains one of Piedmont’s most gregarious and generous producers. The cellar door is always open here; early in the morning, late at night, weekends, and pretty much anytime he and his crew aren’t in their impeccably cared for vineyards. I know I am not alone in wishing Clerico a speedy and full recovery. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including: de Grazia Imports; tel. Very dark purple. Heady crushed blueberry nose. Mouthfilling and rather gorgeous – great texture. Marked acidity but it's all about fruit and power. (JR)
