The 1970 Rauzan-Ségla is disappointing considering the vintage. It has pungent mushroom scents, a bit of the old pig sty that intimates that the cellars were not as clean as they should have been. The palate is hard and austere, perhaps left in barrels too long with a decent cedar-driven finish that does little to compensate. The 1971 Rauzan-Ségla is the better option. Tasted twice with consistent notes, the last from a purchased bottle.

The 1970 Rauzan-Segla has never been one of mine (or Robert Parker's) favorite vintages and it was interesting to revisit it after many years. Mature in color, it has a smudged nose of singed leather, vestiges of dark fruit, a little dusty with an odd fishy (Thai fish oil?) scent. The palate is firm and masculine as expected, rather brusque and foursquare, missing the freshness of young vintages. This Margaux is a bit like your prickly grandfather -- curmudgeonly and short-tempered. Drink soon. Tasted September 2016.
