Tasting notes
The 2000 Viñedo Chadwick is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto, Maipo, and was aged for 18 months in French barrels. From a fairly cool, slow-ripening year, this is a wine of nuanced character. Dark, garnet red in the glass. The nose presents ripe fruit notes, orange peel and hints of liqueur followed by rose and a whiff of licorice. Sugary with intense flavor, the still grippy tannins maintain the firm structure and enhance the layer of herbal notes before the development of licorice and gianduja aromas toward the end.

The 2000 Vinedo Chadwick has a ripe, sumptuous bouquet with forward black cherries, burnt toast and kirsch aromas that offer dried rose petal notes with time. The palate is medium-bodied with dusty tannins. This is a little coarse and rustic towards the savory finish, although it displays admirable length. Drink now. It was a pleasure to spend two or three hours in the company of Eduardo Chadwick at his estate and undertake verticals of his wines. Few have done more to promote Chilean wine than him, most notably with his blind comparisons with First Growth to demonstrate that Sena stands shoulder to shoulder with Old World icons. As you might guess, we had a long debate about that! But also, we engaged in a long discussion about viticulture and the philosophy behind his portfolio. Readers may remark on my relatively mean scores. I thought long and hard about this. But I firmly feel that recent vintages from Errazuriz completely outshine the older ones and speaking at length with winemaker Francisco Baettig, there is a sense of a winery changing tack and in my opinion, what this estate will produce in the next twenty years will completely surpass the previous twenty years. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 17 months in new French oak barrels. pH 3.65, TA 4.83 g/l, RS 1.83 g/l. Bright crimson with some age at the rim. Very mellow, lightweight nose. Fully evolved but very clean and fresh. Quite marked acidity. Very direct mellow claret flavours with a hint of dust. I’d say the fruit is just starting to fade and the alcohol insists just slightly but it’s a very unforced wine. (JR)
