Score 81/100 · Drink 2018-2022, Neal Martin, May 2018

The 1998 Labégorce has quite a high-toned, rather pinched bouquet that certainly lacks the fruit intensity and complexity of recent vintages. This seems rather static and bereft of sufficient fruit. The palate is sharp, rather green and vegetal and it may have well been chaptalized to make up for that lack of ripeness. It serves as a reminder of how much this Margaux estate has improved in recent years. Tasted at the château.

Soft in texture but rather herbal, with a plum undertone. Medium-bodied, with a light finish. Best after 2003. 15,000 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2001
