Just like what clearly happened in Rioja, where there are plenty of wines to taste, it seems that in Ribera del Duero 1981 was also a better vintage than 1982, despite 1982 being famous because it saw the birth of the appellation. It's what I felt when tasting the 1981 Único in magnum next to the 1982; the 1981 is superb, one of the finest vintages and certainly the highlight from the 1980s, together with 1986. The wine shows youth, Ribera to the core and the essence of Vega Sicilia, a great, classical Vega, a legend in the making. Or is it already a legend? It was produced with Tinto Fino and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon plus 15% Merlot and Malbec with 13.5% alcohol. This was released in March 1998. 77,092 bottles and 2,000 magnums produced. The label has a painting from Antonio Vázquez.

65% Tinto Fino, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and Malbec. Late, problematic harvest. 18 months in new French oak, then progressively older casks for 7 years’ ageing. 77,092 bottles, 2,000 magnums and 52 double magnums. From magnum. Complete, ripe but still so incredibly fresh and vibrant. (JR)

The 1981 Unico is one of the forgotten gems of the decade, yet at thirty years of age it has really come into its own. It is a blend of 65% Tinto Fino, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot/Malbec. Initially it seems lighter on the nose than the 1982, but given time in the glass it simply blossoms with pure kirsch and Morello cherry aromas, plus a dalliance with orange sorbet. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced. There is a sense of symmetry, the leitmotif of great Unico wines. Fresh and vital, this 1981 is a stunning addition to the pantheon of great wines from this estate. 77,092 bottles produced. Drink now-2030. eRobertParker.com.August, 2012

Deep red. Superripe aromas of currant, espresso and iron. Dense, ripe, fruity and youthful. Supple and generous, with good supporting acidity. Really fat with fruit but seems less powerfully structured than the '86. The firm finish builds and builds.
